TL;DR Girl likes girl, they kith, and then don't get together. But it's not a big deal.
I cannot explain how much I love this movie - to this day, when someone asks me what my favorite movie is, this is the one I think of. I think that if somehting encapsulates the gay high school experience it's this - maybe it's also the fact that I watched it when i was at this exact situation. This movie is not for everyone - to like it you have to get really into the mind of the protagonists (either of them, I think), which is understandably not a universal thing.

This is one of the movies where nothing happens - kind of. The acting is, for me, immaculate, not because of the oscar-worthy performances but because Anne is awkward as shit, and you she doesn't talk like a 25 year old movie protagonist, more like just a girl in your math class. The soundtrack has Anthems For a Seventeen Year Old Girl so that alone is a massive win. And the plot is just kind of there.

The protagonist, Anne, realises she has a crush on a girl, has some sexuality realisations and goes about her life as a typical 17 year old, for the most part. We watch as she awkwardly tries to get close and become friends with her, they smooch and then said girl (Sasha) casually dumps her because she is "straight" and that is about the extent of it. The movie is non-linear, with cuts in the middle of a scene that continues 20 minutes later, which somehow changes your entire view of the story. I will say there is a SA plotline which I am not sure how I feel about, since the ending gives a sort of  "redemption" arc to the m*n, and I am not a fan of that but I think they just wanted to show that doing a few good things and one bad thing does not make you a good person in any case.

There is no "highlight" in this movie - it is all subtle and treated as unimportant - no loud music or dramatic camera work, just vibes honestly. And I absolutely love that because it just doesn't matter - it's just the first girl the protagonist loved which doesn't mean she will be the only one or the one that she is supposed to end up with, it's just that sometimes the first person hits us differently.

I wish there were more movies like that. And I kinda wish I lived a little more through highschool but no I had to just be depressed or something. Cringe. Anyways, my rating is this: <3
